Today, on this in 1879, Bethune College was established as a pioneer of women’s education in India. It was founded by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune.
The college was founded as a secular Native Female School in 1849. Later, in 1879 it was developed into Bethune College, the first women’s college in India.
The name of Bethune College was inextricably associated with higher education for Bengali women. The mission of the college has always been the development of a complete woman. The motto of the College is "Vidya Vindatey Amritam" means 'knowledge provides immortal bliss.'
India post has issued commemorative postage stamp on the Centenary of the Bethune College in September 4, 1978. The design of the stamp depicts the building of the college.
