Silver Rupee of Ja’afar Ali Khan of Cambay

Cambay or Khambat was a Princely State located at the head of the Gulf of Gujarat. The name is said to be derived from khambha or stambha-tirth which was the pool of Mahadeo. In 1298 it was described as one of the richest towns in India.Jaafar Ali Khan ruled the state from 1297 to 1333 AD. During the reign he issued silver and copper coins in the denomination of Rupee, Paisa, and Falus. These coins were struck at Khambayat in square and circular shape.
Depicted here is a silver Rupee issued during his reign. The obverse of a coin has a Persian legend ‘Sikka Mubarak Ja’afar Ali Khan’ with AH 1315. The reverse of a coin inscribed with the legend ‘Zarb Khambayat Sanah 19 Julus Mainamat Manus’.
