A passion for music: Bhimsen Joshi

The legendary superstar of the Kirana Gharana, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was born today on 4th Feb 1922. He was Indian vocalist in the Hindustani classical tradition trained under Sawai Gandharva. His singing is stock with ‘khayal’ form of singing.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is mostly remembered for his renditions of devotional music and has acclaimed the honour of Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 1998, the highest honour conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi. He was also honoured with ‘Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2008.

The song ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’ in music web 1988 on the occasion of the 50th year of Indian Republic also added to the glories collection of this well-known singer.

To honour this legendary Indian vocalist India Post issued a commemorative stamp in 2014.
