Toned Proof 1880 Indian Head Cent at FUN Auction
2019-01-25 Fri
A coin dealer named Rich Uhrich had offered several interesting coins at Heritage’s Florida United Numismatists Auctions that was organised from 9th January to 14th January. Uhrich started collecting toned Proof Indian Head cents in 2008. He was always keen on building a special set of coloured coins without carbon spots. The most amazing coin from his collection was an 1880 cent graded PCGS Proof 65 brown. It was earlier owned by former ANA executive director, and expert of toned coins, Larry Shepherd. These coins are not rare as it has a mintage of 3,955 pieces. However, because of the coin’s beautiful toning, it could be sold for $500.
Heritage had auctioned a similar coin but with deep blue, purple, gold and magenta toning for $3,000 on 13th January during their Internet Signature Session. Another highlight was a beautifully toned 1864 Indian Head featuring Designer’s Initial L cent with designer James B. The obverse clearly depicts Longacre’s initial. Graded Proof 64 brown, the coin was sold for $48,000.
