New Commemorative coin of M. G. Ramachandran

The CM K. Palaniswami and Deputy CM O. Paneerselvam with other dignitaries today released the commemorative coin of Rupees 100 and Rupees 5 on occasion of 102nd Birth Anniversary of former CM Dr. M.G.Ramachandran. The event was organized at Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University Complex in Chennai. Marudur Gopalan Ramachandran, popularly known as M. G. R., was an Indian actor, filmmaker, and politician who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for ten years between 1977 and 1987.He is a cultural icon in the state of Tamil Nadu and is regarded as one of the most influential actors of the Tamil film industry. He was popularly known as "Makkal Thilagam" (People's King) as he was popular with the masses. He was a philanthropist and a humanitarian icon.
In 2017, a commemorative stamp of Rs. 15 was issued by Government of India in honour of M. G. Ramachandran. The new released commemorative coins of INR 5 and 100 have the smiling portrait of the former CM on the reverse with the Roman legend, “Dr. M.G.Ramachandran Birth Centenary” written below “1917-2017”, with the Devanagari legend, “Dr. M.G.Ramachandran Janma Shatabdi” above the portrait.
