2016 Betty Ford First Spouse Gold Coins Launched

On 25th March, the United States Mint released its 2016-W $10 Betty Ford First Spouse Gold Coins in different formats. The obverses feature a portrait of Mrs. Ford, wife of the 38th U.S. President Gerald R. Ford which was designed by Barbara Fox and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso. Other inscriptions on the obverses include ‘BETTY FORD’, ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’, ‘LIBERTY’, ‘2016’, ‘38th’, and ‘1974-1977’.The reverse, designed by Chris Costello and executed by Renata Gordon features a young woman ascending a staircase, representing Mrs. Ford’s views about addiction, breast cancer awareness, and the rights of women. Other inscriptions on the reverse include ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’, ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’, ‘$10’, ‘1/2 OZ’., and ‘.9999 FINE GOLD’.
This release marks the second-last spousal coins which is a part of a special programme that started in 2007. Eight obverse portraits and seven reverse designs symbolic of her life were designed for this coin, out of which the U.S. Mint announced the winning designs last month.
