Jaipur was ruled from the 12th century till India's independence by different rulers in different ages such as Dhundhar kingdom, Kachwaha kingdom, Amber kingdom, and the Jaipur Kingdom. The state was directly ruled by the Mughal Empire and then indirectly by the British.

Maharaja Madho Singh II was the adopted son of Maharaja Ram Singh. He was the second last Maharaja to rule the Jaipur state from 1880 to 1922 AD. Madhoji supported the supremacy of British rule and even respected their stronghold on India. He also helped Britain in their various military expenditures and was besotted with many titles and privileges.

Madho Singh’s coins belong to Jhar Shahi issues and were minted at Sawai Jaipur. He introduced coins in gold, silver, and copper. These coins were issued in the denomination of Mohur, Rupee, and Paisa. Its obverse features a name and title of a king in Persian legend with Jhar symbol while the reverse depicts Queen Victoria’s name.

Represented here is a gold Mohur issued during his reign. Classical Numismatic Gallery listed this beautiful piece for INR 36,000 to 38,000.
