Chunghwa Post - Taiwan issued a stamp promoting the gradually disappearing local tribal art. The Natives of Taiwan are known are Atayals which are known for the woven goods and facial decoration.The art of facial tattoos is gradually disappearing. Stained during dignified festivals these tattoos have deep social meaning. The males of the tribe tattoo their forehead with one or more vertical whereas women draw lines on the forehead as well as on cheeks extending from ears to lips.
The tattoos are not just symbols of glory but they convey other meaning too. Besides, they demonstrate tribal glories as well as they convey that the bearers have reached adulthood and also demonstrate the bravery and talent of the bearer.
The stamp features a tattooed Atayal woman weaving against the background of Dabajian Mountain.
