Ukraine’s Latest Commemorative Banknote

On 17th December, Ukraine issued a commemorative non-circulating 100-hryvnia banknote to celebrate the 100th anniversaries of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917 to 1921 as well as the first banknotes of an independent Ukraine. In 1918, the Ukrainian government had renamed its domestic money from “rubles” to “hryvnia” as well.The obverse side features the denomination surrounded by a wreath of flowers, fruits, vegetables and wheat. A woman wearing National Costume with a wheat sheaf and a sickle in her hand is also depicted. A man wearing an apron can be seen standing against a big hammer covered with laurel. The reverse side also features the denomination under a wreath of plants and fruit hanging from two decorated columns. A trident can be seen in a laurel wreath at the centre. The trident can be seen on the watermark as well. A yellow-blue glow appears on the Ukrainian flags when the note is held against ultraviolet light. The note as a width of 80 mm and length of 170 mm. 100,000 such notes have been printed and all of them are souvenirs and not legal tender.
On 12th December 1922, Ukraine became part of the U.S.S.R. as the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic, and the first independent Ukrainian currency notes were no longer issued.
