First Set of Bavaria's Very Own Stamp

2019-01-04 Fri

In February of 1920, the Republic of Bavaria began to issue its very own, unique, postage stamps.

Bavaria was a German state from 1949 to 1920. In May 1919, after the fall of the short-lived Bavarian Socialist (Soviet) Republic, Bavaria declared itself a "free state" in association with the Weimar Republic.

Bavarian stamps parallel the rich and sometimes turbulent history of the Kingdom from 1849 through 1920. In many ways, stamps of Bavaria reflect the political and social changes occurring during this period.

The stamps were issued with low values and they feature a plowman, a sower, and an allegory of "electricity" - harnessing light to a water wheel. These new Bavarian stamps are inscribed with just "BAYERN" and the denomination.

The 5, 10 and 15 German reichspfennig denominated stamps depict a plowman working in the field and the stamps with the denominations of 50, 60 and 75 German reichspfennig feature a ‘sower’. Most importantly the stamps with the denominations of 20, 30 and 40 German reichspfennig show a man holding a bulb and a lightning bolt which is an allegory of electricity.
