Raj Narain, a great freedom fighter and an eminent politician was breathed his last on 31st December 1986.

Raj Narain son of Anant Prasad Singh, came from well known affluent Bhumihar family of Motikoat- a village in Varanasi. He was born on March 15, 1917. Royal Bhumihar family directly associated with the family of Maharaja Balwant Singh, who were kings of Varanasi, over a century back. He was educated at Banaras Hindu University and did M.A. and LL.B.

He was the President of Student Congress during Quit India Movement in 1942. An active participant of many socialist and independence movement and campaigns, he suffered imprisonment many times.

Dr Lohia admired him a lot, and described him as "a person who has a heart of a Lion and practices of Gandhi". He said that "if in India there could be just three or four persons like him, dictatorship can never shadow the democracy".

He had a long and distinguished political career. In 1977 he was a member of Bhartiya Janata Party who once defeated Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in a Lok Sabha poll.

India Post has issued a Postage Stamp to commemorate a distinguished son of India on March 23, 2007.
