The word Malla means Cheek; a kind of fish and Powerful. It is referred to the tribe’s name and a country. Malla was a Janapada during the ancient period in India. It was a country which was situated to the west of Videha and to the northwest of Magadha. Today, it is situated in modern-day Deoria and Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh.

During the ancient period, at the time of Buddha, the kingdom of Malla was divided into two parts with two capitals as Pava and Kushinara. Both the capitals of Malla had separate Assembly Halls where they discussed all their political and religious matters.
