The RBI released a document recently stating that it’s going to release a new 20 rupees banknote with extra features. New Rs 10, Rs 50, Rs 100, and Rs 500 banknotes have already been released along with the latest denomination Rs 200 and Rs 2,000 banknotes.

These notes belong to the Mahatma Gandhi (New) series and were introduced in November 2016. The size and designs of new notes are considerably different from the old ones. Except for banned 500 and 1000 rupees notes, all other notes remain legal tender.

As per official records, 4.92 billion Rs 20 notes were in circulation as on 31st March 2016 and almost 10 billion Rs 20 notes were in circulation by March 2018. This accounts for 9.8 per cent of the total number of currency notes in circulation by March 2018.
