The Martyrs of 1931 23rd March is declared the Martyrs’ Day to remember the sacrifice of and to pay homage to the great heroes of India: Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev.

On this day in the year of 1931 the three revolutionaries were hanged. Their death marked an end of one of the influential eras of Indian Freedom Struggle.

The three revolutionaries were part of Hindustan Socialist Republican Association – the revolutionary organisation which fought for India against the British rule for independence. Their work lighted a spark of nationalism among Indian Youth.

They were charged for the murder of British Office Sanders and were given the death penalty. On 23rd March 1931, they were hanged in Lahore jail. With their death the revolutionary phase of Indian Freedom Struggle came to an end.

India Post had issued a couple of stamps to pay tribute to these heroes of India. Bhagat Singh appears on at least two stamps of India. A 20p stamp was issued on his 61st birth anniversary.

Rajguru is featured on a commemorative stamp issued in 2013. This Rs5.00 stamp shows the statues of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev in the background.
