Finest Special Mint 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar

2018-12-19 Wed

The finest recorded 1967 Special Mint set half dollar, graded NGC MS 69 Ultra Cameo was sold by Stack’s Bowers Galleries on 15th August at Rarities Night auction for $12,600. A total of 1,863,344 were produced, out of which, almost all have amazing prooflike surfaces. Unlike the 1965 and 1966 SMS coins, the Dies were not overpolished for striking these 1967 coins.

Instead of traditional Proof coins, the US Mint issued Special Mint sets from 1965 to 1967. Most of these coins were reflective but you will rarely find a rich cameo contrast between the fields and devices like the offered coin.

Kennedy half dollars were introduced in 1964 and they are still being struck today. These coins are available in different finishes and compositions. One of the variants has a dual-date 1776–1976 as it was specially issued to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the half issue.
