Martin Van Buren was born on 5th December 1782; He spent his childhood in Kinderhook; New York. His father was a tavern owner and farmer. He received a formal education at the age of 14; since from childhood, he was an intelligent student. He learned law by working and apprenticing for attorneys in New York. In 1803 he passed the bar and became a lawyer.

Martin Van Buren was much interested in politics at a very young age. He attended his first political convention at the age of 17. Later, he played a key role in New York state politics. People use to consider him as a master manipulator of ‘machine politics’.

He was the first president of United States from New York and was not of British descent, was also the first president to be born an American citizen. He had served his country as vice president during Jackson’s second term and handily won the 1837 presidential election.

The United States of America had issued his 1 dollar commemorative coin with his portrait on the obverse side of the coin.
