2018-11-10 Sat

The first Christmas Issue of Christmas Island is the “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” mosaic stamp issued on 10th November 1969.

"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is a Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems. Its lyrics had been written by Charles Wesley. The original hymn was composed as a "Hymn for Christmas-Day".

The 5 cent stamp is made up of mosaic. It features an angel playing the harp in the center. The stamp is inscribed with the “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” at the top and “Christmas Island with Indian Ocean below” at the bottom. At the right side of the stamp the issued year is seen and the denomination at left.

The beautiful stamp depicts a perfect colour combination of blue, red and golden mosaic tiles on the plain white background which brings out the sanctity of the stamp and the purpose of the issue.
