2018-10-29 Mon

The third session of Joel Anderson Collection of Paper Money Sale was conducted by Stack’s and Bowers on 25th October. One of the highlights during the sale was the extremely rare 1878 $100 Silver Certificate of Deposit, graded PCGS Currency Very Fine 25.

There are only two such notes in private hands. It features a triple signature of Assistant Treasurer A.U. Wyman, Treasurer James Gilfillan, and Register Glenni William Scofield. Wyman was the only one who signed it by hand. Printed on blue-tinted paper, the obverse also features a portrait of President James Monroe, a red Treasury seal on a well-decorated “100”, a collage of vegetal relief, a scalloped spirograph feature, serial number, and denomination. The reverse features the texts “UNITED STATES”, “SILVER”, and “CERTIFICATE.”

One such note was sold for $59,000 in 1989, and this time, it was offered for an estimated value of $500,000 to $700,000.
