2018-10-25 Thu
The Royal Australian Mint released two special coins to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Legendary Classic Rock Band AD/DC. Interestingly, out of the 30,000 50 cents coins that were struck, 10 have been actually struck with 3,500,000 volts of artificial lightning using a Tesla coil! The high voltage experiment was carried out after collaborating with The Questacon National Science And Technology Centre. Since the coins are good conductors of electricity, the lightning’s mark is can be seen only under a magnifying glass. These 10 coins were sent out randomly to people who ordered the AC/DC: 45 Years Of Thunder Uncirculated Coins online. A unique frosting has been added to these 10 coins so that they can be easily identified.
A nickel-plated, plectrum-shaped $5 coin, featuring the band’s logo has also been released. The coin comes along with an actual guitar pick along in an amp-shaped presentation box. Both coins officially licensed AC/DC merchandise.
AC/DC is known for its high energy rock music and the voltage sign has been a part of their insignia as well. Striking the coins with an artificial thunder was indeed a very novel and exciting idea by the Royal Australian Mint. AC?DC fans would love to possess special coins like these.
