Canada Honours Bluenose Schooner On Coins
2016-03-16 Wed
Canadian coinage has a special place for the iconic schooner Bluenose since it first appeared on the 10-cent coin in 1937. The ship makes a comeback with the latest 2 new collector 10-cent coins. The reverse design by artist Neil Hamelin features Canada’s iconic schooner, under full sail, at a distinctive racing angle. The detailing includes the rigging and even the dories on deck. Over the foremast and mainmast, the Canadian Red Ensign and the Flag of Nova Scotia flap in the wind that fills the ship’s eight sails, as the Bluenose sails towards victory in the waters of the North Atlantic. The design comes with selective colour and includes the name of the issuing country, the year date and denomination. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Upcoming releases celebrate the Marco Polo (May 3), the Amazon (Aug. 2) and the Discovery (Oct. 4).
