The Winterthur 2 ½ Rp stamp – the rarest of Swiss Philatelic items is considered as the “Real Gem of Swiss Philately”.The Swiss stamp, known as Winterthur was issued in 1850 by Zurich postal administration. This particular stamp with 2 ½ Rp value was released to pay reduced postage for local mail in important towns of the cantons Zurich, Zug, Schaffhausen and Thurgau.
The Winterthur Stamps were in the circulation for a very short time, as the Federal local appeared throughout Switzerland within a couple of months. Hence, the Winterthur stamps of 2 ½ became a rare philatelic beauty.
The stamp features an unusual ornamented design of a cross with post horns placed between the stamp subjects. With fresh colours and broad margin, this stamp is truly an unusual philatelic Rarity of Swiss post.
A set of two 2 ½ Rp Winterthur stamp was sold by Christoph Gartner held on 16th – 17th August 2018 for the price of USD 46,485.
