A PCGS Brilliant Proof 68 1936 Indian Head 5-cent coin with a green CAC sticker was sold for $19,200 by Stack’s Bowers Galleries on 15th August at the Rarities Night auction that was held at ANA World’s Fair of Money in Philadelphia. It is one of the finest known coins of its type. Collectors know these coins as “Buffalo Nickels”.Proof Indian Head 5-cent coins designed by noted sculptor James Earle Fraser were produced in a Matte Finish between 1913 and 1916. The series was replaced by Jefferson 5-cent and coins in two different finishes were produced from 1936 to 1938.
4,420 Proof Indian Head 5-cent pieces were struck in 1936. They are found in Satin as well as Brilliant Finish versions. The Satin Finish coins are commonly found. However, the exact mintages of each type are still a mystery.
