Gentoo Penguin on Coins of Falkland Islands

Pobjoy Mint released a colourful 50-penny coin featuring Gentoo penguins for the Falkland Islands. It is the second coin in Falkland Island’s Penguin coin series. The largest population of Gentoo penguins is found in the Falkland Islands. A total of five coins will be released in the series depicting five different breeds of penguins that are native to the Islands.

Gentoo penguins have a longer tail as compared to the other breeds of penguins. It also has a distinct white bar over the crown on the head. Naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster discovered it in 1781 on the Falkland Islands. He had accompanied Capt. James Cook in his voyage.

The reverse features a coloured head-shot of a gentoo penguin while the obverse depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The 8 grams coin has a diameter of 27.3 millimeters and a mintage limit of 7,500 pieces. It can be purchased for $14.95.
