Heritage Auctions recently sold an 1854-S Coronet, No Motto gold $5 half eagle for $2.16 million on 16th August during the Platinum Night session that was conducted along with the ANA World’s Fair of Money. Only four such coins have been identified so far, and the offered coin was the latest discovery, graded by NGC as EF 45.

One such example was sold for $187,000 in 1982 and no other example has been publically auctioned. Due to this, its market value has been speculative for different grades. A total of 268 coins were struck at San Francisco Mint during the first year of production. Out of the other three remaining examples, one is in private hands. One is a part of the National Numismatic Collection and the other one is a part of the Pogue family collection in Texas. One example was stolen in 1967 at the Coconut Grove, Florida.
