The Safavid dynasty was one of the most significant ruling dynasties of Iran, often considered the beginning of modern Iranian history. The Safavid Shahs ruled over one of the Gunpowder Empires. They established the Twelver school of Shia Islam as the official religion of the empire.
Shah Ismail was the founder of the Safavid dynasty, ruling from 1502 to 1524AD. The rule of Islam is one of most vital in the history of Iran. During the reign issued various coin in gold and silver.
Depicted above is a silver Shahi of Shah Ismail I issued in 916 AH from Herat mint. The obverse of a coin depicts with Persian legend ‘Shah Ismail name and title, Clear Mint and date below’. The reverse of a coin inscribed with Shia Kalima, date repeated and the name of 12 Shia Imams (Bara Imam) around.
