The German Empire, also known as Imperial Germany, was the German nation state that existed from the Unification of Germany in 1871 until the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1918. It was founded in 1871 when the south German states joined the North German Confederation.

By 1900, Germany became the largest economy in Europe and the second largest in the world behind the United States. During the German Empire, some beautiful Imperial banknotes were issued.

The banknote depicted beside is a 100 Mark banknote issued in the series of 1908. This Pre-World War I note features the Imperial eagle prominently on the front and several female figures on the reverse.
