The second batch of new Thai Banknotes featuring King Maha Vajiralongkorn will be released in July by the country’s central bank. The nation would be celebrating the King’s birthday on 28th July and the new 500 baht and 1,000-baht notes will be officially circulated on the same day. From 6th April onwards, the first batch of the new notes is being circulated. Existing and older series of banknotes would remain legal tender.
65-year-old King Maha Vajiralongkorn was enthroned in December 2016 but the date of coronation has not yet been decided. His father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away in October 2016 and many Thais observed a year of mourning by wearing black clothes as a mark of respect. The cremation ceremony took place in October 2017 after this mourning period. Throughout the 70 years of his rule, King Bhumibol has been featured on banknotes.
