Nelson Mandela International Day

2018-07-18 Wed

This International Nelson Mandela Day will mark 100 years since the birth of this legend. This year United Nations has adopted a theme to follow Mandela’s life and legacy and follow his call ‘to make of the world a better place’ on this centenary.

In dedication to the Nelson Mandela’s fight against poverty, the Nelson Mandela Foundation will be honouring his leadership and devotion to fight against poverty and promoting social justice for all. The UN General Assembly further honours his contribution by commencing an exhibition from 9th July to 2nd September in New York City.

This exhibition is organized by the Un Department of Public information in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of South Africa to the UN.

Australia Post issued a commemorative stamp in 2015, to honour Nelson Mandela’s first visit in Australia in 1990 just after the end of his 27 years of imprisonment. He also visited Australia again in 2000.

This stamp illustrates a powerful image of Mandela taken in 1996 in his iconic ‘Madiba’ Shirt. The background of this image portrait is an imposing photograph clicked on 11 February 1990, the day Mandela was released from the Prison on Robben Island.
