Verigar was the first postage stamp series of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs, issued in Slovenia after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy at the end of World War I. These stamps were designed in the year 1918 but were issued on 3 January 1919 after the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.

The name of the stamps is derived from the Slovene word ‘veriga’ meaning chain. The stamp depicts a man who has broken the chains enslaving him and stands before a rising sun. The scene symbolizes the freedom of the Slavic peoples from Austria-Hungary.

Designed by the academic painter Ivan Vavpotic, the man in the stamp was a Gymnast with the name Stane Derganc. The stamp design includes the abbreviated name of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs written in Serbian Cyrillic and Gaj’s Latin script.

This stamp was commemorated twice not 0nly on its 75th Anniversary but also on the 90th anniversary in the years 1994 and 2009 respectively.
