New Banknotes and Coins to Commemorate 100th Anniversary of Mandela

The South African Reserve Bank will be releasing new commemorative banknotes as well as coins on 18th July to celebrate the 100th Birth Anniversary of the national hero - Nelson Mandela. Details about the designs and security features would be revealed on a launch ceremony that would take place on 13th July.

The new banknotes would depict an image of the former South African president on both sides. Currently, the reverse of these banknotes depict images of a rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo and a leopard. These images would be replaced by Nelson Mandela’s image on these limited edition banknotes. A new commemorative R5 coin would also be released by the South African Mint featuring a portrait of the great leader. Test packs of the banknotes have been already circulated among members of the cash industry. The new notes in R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200 denominations, will circulate along with the old ones for a limited period.
