Square area type gold Mohur of Aurangzeb

This gold Mohur of square area type shown beside was minted during the reign of Aurangzeb. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with Persian couplet- ‘Sikka Zad Dar Jahan Chu Mihr Muneer’ seen in margins while ‘Shah Aurangzeb Alamgir’ depicted in the centre within a square area. The reverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Julus Mainamat Manus’ within a square area and ‘Bandar Mubarak’(Surat) clearly readable in left and top margins.

The square area type coins of Aurangzeb struck from Akbarabad, Shahjahanabad, Junagarh, Akbarnagar, and Jahangirnagar mints. This is the first square area type coin of Aurangzeb to have come to light which particularly showing the epithet ‘Bandar-e-Mubarak’ (Surat) clearly.
