The dragon stamp was possibly the first stamp of China, issued by the modern mail services around 1878. Previously the communication and correspondence by Post were used by the army. Afterwards, when these stamps were used in local circulation, the Postal service started for the common people
Three stamps were issued in this dragoon stamp series printed in three different colours green, red and orange with different values of 1, 3 and 5. These stamps are also called the most expensive Chinese stamp in the western hemisphere.
One of the stamps was sold for 499,000 dollars to a Hong Kong Philatelist in an Auction held in London in 1991.
