Germany released the second coin in its popular "Climate Zones of the Earth" €5 coin series. The series comprises of 5 coins which will be released annually from 2017 to 2021. All these coins will feature a polymer ring between two copper-nickel portions.
The subtropical zone is featured in the new coin with an orange ring. Last year’s release featured the tropical zone with a red ring and also received the Coin of the Year award at this year’s World Money Fair in Berlin. The next three coins would depict the temperate, subpolar and polar climate zones with green, turquoise and violet rings, respectively.
The first coin had become extremely popular among collectors all over the world. After analysing the demand, the mintage limit has been increased from 2 million to 3 million. The market value of the earlier release has also increased considerably.
Almost 250 people waited patiently in long queues in front of the regional Bundesbank headquarters in Hanover. It was reported that almost five coins were sold per minute. Some coins are already up on auction sites for €15 per piece.
