Pobjoy mint released a new coin for a new series from the Government of Gibraltar. The reverse side of this 50-penny coin depicts adult and infant Barbary macaques. The wild monkey population in Gibraltar is growing unlike declining populations in Africa. These monkeys are locally known as Barbary apes or rock apes. It is a region in Europe with the highest number of wild monkeys. The 8 grams Diamond Finish Barbary Ape copper-nickel coin has a mintage limit of 7,500 pieces and can be purchased for $14.95 each. A magnetic collector’s album with information about the individual primates can be purchased for $7.
The coin comes inside a capsule which is then packaged in a blue pouch. The pouch would not be provided if the coin is purchased with an album. Other three coins in the series would depict the chimpanzee, red colobus monkey, and baboon. All of these would be released later this year.
