This mintless square gold tanka was issued by Ghiyath Shah of Malwa Sultanate. It is listed for INR 50,000 in the upcoming auction of Todywalla which will be held in Mumbai on 20th April 2018.
Ghiyath Shah ruled the Malwa Sultanate from AH 873 until AH 906. During his reign, he issued coins in all three metals gold, silver and copper. At the beginning of his reign he used to strike coins in a circular flan, and in the later period he starting striking his coin is a square flan. His circular coins are scarcer than the square ones.
This square gold tanka which was issued by him weighs around 11.1g. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Al Wathiq Bi'l Malik Al Multaji Abu'l Fath Ghiyath Shah’. The reverse of the coin depicts legend ‘Bin Mahmudshah Al Khalji Al Sultan Khallada Mulkahu’ with AH date 905.
