Gold Tanka of Ala Al-Din Muhammad Khalji

This gold tanka issued by Ala Al-Din Muhammad of Khalji dynasty is listed at the estimate of INR 65,000-75,000 in the upcoming auction of Oswal which will be held in Mumbai on 21st April 2018.

Ala-Al-Din Muhammad Khalji was the third ruler of Khalji dynasty. He came to power in the year 1296 CE and ruled it till 1316 CE. Coinage of Muhammad Khalji is the most copious of the whole Delhi series. He issued coins in gold, silver, copper, and billon. His gold and silver coins were struck in large quantity from the mints like Delhi, Dar-al-Islam, and Deogiri. Billon coins issued by him are of two types. Both the coins have the same weight but one contains 25% of silver known as ‘Six gani’ and other contains 7.5% of silver known as ‘Two gani’.

This rare gold tanka was issued by him from the mint Hazrat Delhi. The weight of the coin is around 10.9g. The obverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘al sultan al-a ‘zam Ala Al Duniya Wa’l Din Abu’l Muzaffar Muhammad Shah Al Sultan’. The reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Sikandar Al Thani Yamin Al Khilafa Nasir Amir Al-Mu minin’ written within the circle with mint name and date is written in the margin. This coin is in extremely fine condition.
