New Generation Currency Series of Coins of Philippines

27 Mar 2018  Tue

The full set of the New Generation Currency (NGC) Coin Series including 10-Piso, 5-Piso, 1-Piso, 25-Sentimo, 5-Sentimo and the 1-Sentimo coins would be released into circulation as per an official announcement by the Central Bank of Philippines on 26th March.

The designs of the new coins have been improved in terms of security and aesthetics. Micro-printed details have been engraved on the 10-Piso and 5-Piso coins using laser-engraving technology. The metallic composition of the new coins also minimizes the chances of illegal coin hoarding which is done for the extraction of their metal content. The coins are made of nickel-plated steel, making them very durable. Coins made of copper-based metals generally get discoloured easily. The new metal composition is a very good solution to this problem.

The coins would feature New BSP logo. National heroes like Apolinario Mabini is depicted on the 10-Piso, Andres Bonifacio on the 5-Piso and Jose Rizal on the 1-Piso. Three stars and a sun are featured in the 25-, 5- and 1-Sentimo coins. Floral designs similar to the New Generation Currency Banknote Series have also been incorporated.

The existing coins will continue to be legal tender until BSP demonetizes them.
