Latest Thai Banknotes to Feature the New King

On 8th March, the Central Bank of Thailand launched new banknotes featuring a picture of King Maha Vajiralongkorn wearing air force uniform instead of his late father King Bhumibol Adulyadej. 65-year-old King Maha Vajiralongkorn was enthroned in December 2016 but has not yet set a date for his coronation. The new banknotes is a part of this transition phase.Citizens observed a year of mourning after King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s death by wearing black clothes. The mourning period ended with his cremation in October 2017. The banknotes of Thailand featured the late king throughout 70 years of his regime.
Officials stated that the old notes would still remain legal tender. Sizes and colours would not be altered. The new notes will be officially circulated from 6th April.
