Known as the “ships of the desert”, the camels have been featured on since late 1800s. More than 30 Posts have issued stamps featuring different species of Camels.

To the people living in deserts more than 3000, camel are extremely valuable. Provided with food, transportation, fuel, the camels are their companions of survival in the tough living conditions. Their importance has long been recognized on postage stamps.

The first camel to appear on the stamps was the Dromedary Camerl (Arabian camel). Issued in 1893, camels appear on two triangular stamps of Obock (A small port town in Dijbouti): 2-franc bronze green and a larger 5fr red.

The stamps feature the same design of “Camel and Rider.” The stamps show two camels with riders; one near to sight and other far in the background.

Following Obock, Camels appear on the series Philatelic issues of different countries.
