Every tourist’s go to destination when in Calcutta, the beautiful Hawrah Bridge was opened for public transport yesterday, 3rd Feb in the year 1943.

Suspended over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, this bridge was commissioned in 1943 and was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking the two cities of Howrah and Kolkata. It was renamed Rabindra Setu after the great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore on 14 June 1965.

Considered as the busiest cantilever bridge in the world, it is built to weather the storms of the Bay of Bengal region and carries a daily traffic of approximately 100,000 vehicles and possibly more than 150,000 pedestrians.

A commemorative stamp was issued by India Post on 2007.
