2014 saw the 10th issue of the Tiffany Art series. To celebrate this occasion, Palau issued a silver-kilo exclusive edition coin along with the traditional 2 oz. one. Both coins showcase the Zwinger, a famous palace in Dresden. The intricate architecture coupled with sculptures, paintings, gardens, fountains, and squares make the palace the perfect candidate to be displayed on these coins. The design is termed ‘Baroque Dresden’ after the architectural style and location of the Zwinger. The Zwinger was commissioned by the Polish King and designed by the architect, Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor, Balthasar Permoser in the 18th century. They designed a unique building with an almost quadratic courtyard along with beautiful galleries, pavilions, terraces, gates, balustrades, statues, arches, and fountains.
The obverse displays the Kronentor building in the Zwinger which is discernible by its onion-shaped dome. The reverse depicts the richly adorned Wallpavillion in the palace. Both structures are exquisite examples of the Baroque style of architecture imbibed by the Zwinger. The 2 oz. coins have a face value of $10, measure 50 mm in diameter, and have a mintage of 999 pieces while the exclusive 1 kg silver coin have a face value of $50, measure 100 mm in diameter, and have a mintage of only 99 pieces.
