Hiranakas of Penner Region
2017-06-13 Tue
In 1978, a hoard of coins was unearthed from Adampur in the Cuddapah district and later at Chitradurga. After studying the hoard in detail the historians came to a conclusion that they belonged to Hiranakas!Hiranakas were the small ruling family in the southeastern Deccan in around 100 AD to 300 AD. Their evidence is found in the Iksvaku inscription. In the beginning, they were mistaken as the Sebaka coins.
All the coins of Hiranakas bear horse on the obverse. One thing can be noted on the coins is that sometimes the horse is seen very lean as a dog and sometimes fat as elephant and sometimes huge as a dinosaur!
Few of these coins have an inscription on them however it is difficult to the name the ruler. These Hiranaka coins were made of lead as many ancient lead mines were known to have been existed in ancient Andhra Pradesh.
