Malwa Sultan Ghiyath Shah’s Gold Tanka Sold For INR 50,000

Ghiyath Shah ruled Malwa Sultan from AH 873 to AH 906. He was the eldest son of Mahmud and had also served his father as military leader.

He issued coins in gold, silver, and copper. At the beginning of his reign he used to strike his coins in a circular flan, but in the later period, his coins were struck in square flan. Gold coins which were struck in the period from AH 873 to AH 878 are circular in shape and all the coins which were struck in the later period of his reign are in square flan. His circular coins are scarcer than square ones. His silver half tanka weighs around 5-5.1g and was struck from the AH year 878 onwards.

This mintless square gold tanka, weighs around 10.9g. The obverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Al-Wathiq Bi’l Malik Al-Multaji Abul Fath Ghiyath Shah’. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Bin Mahmud Shah Al-Khilji Al-Sultan Khallada Mulkahu’. Date on the coin is not clearly visible.

This gold coin was sold for INR 50,000 at Todywalla Auction.
