The Western Kshatrapas also known as the Western Satraps were Indo-Scythian or Saka rulers who governed large parts of western and central India from roughly 35 CE to 415 CE. Their territories included present-day Gujarat, Saurashtra, parts of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh (Malwa), and Sindh. They are termed “Western” to distinguish them from the Northern Satraps based around Mathura and Punjab.
Originally appointed as governors, they later evolved into independent rulers, often adopting the higher title Mahakshatrapa. Their rule spanned approximately 350–380 years and included around 27 kings. Coinage serve as the primary evidence for reconstructing their history, due to the scarcity of inscriptions and literary sources.
The Western Kshatrapas functioned as a significant cultural and economic bridge, blending Central Asian or Saka, Persian, Greek, and Indian influences. They promoted maritime trade with Rome, patronized cave architecture, and left a lasting impact on the history of the Deccan and Gujarat. Their coinage remains one of the most extensively studied in Indian numismatics.
Nahapana (c. 24–70 CE or 119–124 CE) was their most prominent ruler. He controlled regions including Malwa, southern Gujarat, northern Konkan, and areas around Nashik. He issued silver drachms, typically featuring his bust on the obverse and symbols such as the arrow and thunderbolt on the reverse.
The lead coin described above weighs 15.98 grams and was likely minted in the Junnar region. The obverse depicts a majestic lion with a mane, standing before a plough-headed standard within a railing, placed above a triangle-headed standard. A Shrivatsa symbol appears near its mouth, with a three-arched hill below the belly and a curved line beneath the platform. The Brahmi legend “Rano Mahakhatapasa Nahapanasa” encircles the design. The reverse features a thunderbolt, a long arrow, and a strung bow-and-arrow motif.
