Nasir Al-Din Mahmud Gold Tanka Sold For INR 3, 50, 000

Nasir Al-Din Mahmud ruled Bengal from AH 837- AH 864. In these 27 years of rule, he issued a large number of coins in various types and varieties. Some of the coins which he had issued have images of lion, Chhatra (royal umbrella) and seven circles etc. His lion tanka which he had issued in the AH 849 is one of the most prominent specimens.

Legends on the reverse side of the coins are of various types.

I) Coins with Al-mu’ayyad legend; which reads as ‘Al-mu’ayyad bi-ta yid Al-rahman Khalifa Allah bi’l Hujjat wa’l Burhan.
II) Coin with Shahada.
III) Ghawth legend; reads as ‘Ghawth Al-Islam Wa’l Muslimin (Khallada Mulkahu).
IV) Coins with Nasir Legend; ‘Nasir Al-Islam Wa’l Muslimin Khallada Mulkahu.
V) Coins with Khallada legend; reads as ‘Khallada Allah Mulkahu wa Sultanahu’.
This gold tanka which he had issued from Dakhil ‘Banjaliya’ mint, weighs around 10.6g. The obverse of this coin is inscribed as ‘Nasir Al-Dunya Wa’l Din Abul Mujahid Mahmud Shah Al-Sultan’. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed as ‘Khallada Allah Mulkahu Wa Sultanahu’ within the circle, mint name and date are written in the margin.
