Kalpi is the city which is situated in the Jalaun district between Jhansi and Kanpur in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh. It is said that it was founded by the King Vasudeva in the 4th century. References about the Kalpi fort, one of the eight great forts of the Chandelas, had been found in many texts. The capture of Kalpi by Qutab-Ud-Din Aibak who was the viceroy of Muhammad Ghori in 1196 finds many references. During the subsequent Muslim rule, it has also played a significant part in the history of Central India. The city had also witnessed a continuous struggle for its possession by the subsequent rulers from the Sarqi king of Jaipur to Daulat Khan Lodi and Babur. Kalpi was a governor’s seat and had a mint for the copper coinage.Kapli was a small kingdom which has developed in the administrative district of Firozpur. Firuz Shah Tughluq of Tughluq dynasty had placed it under the control of Malikzada Firuz. Later Malikzada Firuz left Firuzpur and made their head quarter in Kalpi. After the invasion of Timur, Malikzada's son Mahmud assumed the title Nasir-Al-din Shah in the year AH 802. The only coin which is attributed to this sultanate is the copper Falus which is struck by Jalal-Al-Din Fath in the year AH 841.
During the 18th Century, Marathas had also gained over Kalpi and ruled it until the British grab a control over it in 1803.
