Gold Tanka of Muhammad Bin Tughluq Sold for INR 60,000

Reign of Muhammad bin Tughluq begins with the death of Ghiyath al-din Tughluq in the year 1325 AD. Muhammad bin Tughluq was one of the most remarkable rulers and interesting personalities on medieval India. He ruled Delhi from 1325 AD to 1351 AD. He was highly educated and was well versed in Arabic and Persian language. He was also an excellent commander which can be seen from his successful military campaign.

Coinage of Muhammad Bin Tughluq is very complex and innovative. He had issued a large number of coins with the greater number of mints. Many different legends are also found in his coins. Gold and Silver coins issued by him have nearly five main legends.

This gold tanka of type ‘Al-Mujahid' which he had issued from the mint ‘Dar-al-Islam' reads as ‘Al-Mujahid Fi Sibil Allah Muhammad Bin Tughluq Shah’ which means ‘The warrior in the path of Allah' on the obverse. And the reverse of the coin is inscribed with ‘Kalima' in the centre circle, mint name and date are in the margin.

This gold tanka weighs around 11g, and in extremely fine condition. It was sold for INR 60,000 at Todywalla Auction.
