“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.”- Frank Gehry.

Food, clothing and shelter are basic entities for human survival. This led to the birth of urbanisation and establishment of great civilisations. A proof of all this can be seen in its architecture that speaks of its timelessness. One such magnificent construction was manifested by an architect of modern time ‘Edwin Lutyens'.

Edwin Lutyens was born on today’s date - 29th March, in the year 1869. This brilliant British architect was known for his imagination and adoptions of traditional architecture according to the requirement of the era. He was the main architect of several monuments and layouts of New Delhi, also known as ‘Lutyens Delhi', situated in the metropolis of Delhi today.

Lutyens invented his own order of classical architecture which was later known as ‘Delhi Order'. He was fascinated by the Indian architecture and incorporated these ideas in various structures through designs for e.g The Great Neo- Buddhist Dome of ‘Rashtrapati Bhavan'.

He designed many other monuments in New Delhi like Baroda House, Bikaner House, Hyderabad House, and Patiala House. On January 1930 Lutyens was made ‘Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire' (KCIE). He has also built many monuments in Ireland, Spain and England.

Today, this architecture, built by Edwin Lutyens is the base of the Indian government to control the administration of the country. The architecture built by him is beyond appreciation but still reflects the Indian artistic styles in these structures.

Indian artistic styles will show you a gist of nature created by God.

To appreciate this grand and phenomenal structure, India post has issued a miniature sheet in August 2011.
