Firuz Shah Tughluq Gold Tanka Sold For INR 62,500

Tughluq dynasty was one of the greatest dynasties that ruled India from 1320 till 1414. This dynasty was founded by Ghiyath-Al-Din Tughluq in the year 1320. They were a Muslim dynasty of Turkish origin that ruled Delhi Sultanate.

Firuz Shah Tughluq came to the throne after the death of Muhammad Tughluq and his reign lasted for about 37 years from 1351 to 1388 AD. He has also introduced a number of reforms during his reign. Billon and copper coins introduced by him are rare. Silver coins issued by him are extremely rare than gold coins. Some of the coins issued by him are struck in the name of ‘Caliphs Al-Hakim II’ that may have started during the reign of Muhammad bin Tughluq and have continued into the reign of Firuz Tughluq. The first coin which he issued in his own name is dated from AH 759. He also included some of the Caliphs in his coins they are Hakim II, Abul Fath and Abul Abd Allah.

This gold tanka with the name of Caliph ‘Abul Fath Al-Mutasid’, weighs around 11g. Obverse of the coin reads as ‘Al-Sultan Al-Azam Saif Amir Al-Muminin Abul Muzaffar Firuz Shah Sultani Khulidat Mamlakahutu’. And the reverse of the coin reads as ‘Darbat Hadhihi Al-Sikka Al-Imam Amir Al-Muminin Abul Fath Al-Mutasid Billah Khulidat khilafatuhu’

This coin was sold for INR 62,500 at Rajgor’s Auction. This is a rare coin.
