Stamps are not just a tiny piece attached to a letter but they are a recollection of the memoirs of a nation. These tiny pieces of papers tell a story of past and present of a country along with its achievements. One such evidence of great triumph is shown on one of the earliest stamps of Independent India.Vijay Stambh or Tower of Victory is a monument that gives a live testament Rajput state of Mewar. Built on The hilltop fortress of Chittaurgarh Vijay Stambh was constructed by Mewar king Rana Kumbha in 1448.
The tower boasts about the Victory of Rana Kumbha over the combined armies of Malwa and Gujarat led by Mahmud Khilji. It has also witnessed the rise of Mewar State since then and also its defeat by Akbar till it became a part of British India and finally integrated into the Indian Union in April 1948.
India post issued a series of definitive stamps on 2nd Anniversary of the Independence i.e. on 15th August 1949. This Re. 1 stamp depicting Vijaya Stambh is the part of Archaeological and Historical Monuments series.
Apart from being a strong and sturdy witness of Indian History, the tower is a remarkable example of religious pluralism practiced by the Rajputs.
